How to Opt Out of Amazon's Print Holiday Catalog

Amazon wants to fill the Toys R’ Us-shaped hole in our hearts with an old fashioned print holiday catalog much like the recently closed toy store’s “Big Book of Toys.” Amazon’s catalog which The Verge said will be called “A Holiday of Play” hopes to reimagine the Black Friday gift guide by adding QR codes next to every item so you can literally shop out of it with your phone.

I’m of two minds on the idea. On the one hand I have fond memories of reading that Toys R’ Us catalog as kid dreaming of a big holiday haul. On the other I already get a deluge of emails about holiday sales and endure wave after wave of social posts from publications combing through and sorting those deals. Why on earth would I want a paper catalog clogging up my mailbox?

I’m not here to tell you where to come down on this important issue but to empower you to make the decision for yourselves. As it happens it’s easy to let Amazon know that you’d like to pass on receiving the catalog—and any other print marketing materials—through your Amazon account. To opt out of the catalog simply log into Amazon go to your account settings and click “communications preferences.” From that screen select “Do not send me marketing information by mail” and click update.

And that’s it. You are now guaranteed to get a little less Black Friday promo trash this holiday season.
